The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) electronic health record (EHR) incentive programs provide payments to eligible professionals, hospitals, and critical access hospitals as they adopt, implement, upgrade, or demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR technology. Eligible professionals can receive up to $44,000 through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program and up to $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. Beyond the financial incentives, providers are able to deliver better patient care as a result of fewer documentation errors, more readily available patient data, pop-up notifications, and clinical decision support available through the meaningful use of their EHR.
